Ojala said he had been told departing employees do not get paid out sick time, yet two employees who left near his departure were paid out — an inconsistency he asked the council to remedy.
Several council members questioned whether the matter was appropriate for open council discussion because it raised personnel and contract issues. Councillors asked that the city—s labor attorney review the matter, and the council voted to schedule a special closed-session meeting for Friday, Dec. 19 at 10:00 a.m., to consider the issue with legal counsel present.
At the Dec. 15 meeting the mayor said Mr. Ojala is not a current city employee and that he had contacted the mayor to request an agenda spot. Council members emphasized the need to follow proper notice and open-meeting law requirements when scheduling closed sessions to discuss personnel matters.
The council instructed staff to provide appropriate notice for the special meeting and to have the labor attorney review the matter before that meeting.
