Ashwaubenon park board permits alcohol sales at Cornerstone for three more weekends

The Village of Ashwaubenon Park and Recreation Board voted Dec. 16 to permit alcohol sales at three additional weekend tournaments at the Cornerstone Community Ice Center after hearing reports that the trial weekend proceeded without significant incident.

Don Chilson, a Cornerstone representative, told the board, “We didn't really see any major issues,” and said confining sales to a separate room helped contain activity. Chilson also noted the tournament drew a large field, with “32 teams” on the weekend in question.

Chair read a written observation from board member Nancy Mackey, who reported she visited the site and saw beer-garden signage and enforcement: “Signs for the beer garden were posted and multiple signs were up stating that all drinks had to stay in the room,” the correspondence said. Mackey wrote there were “maybe a dozen people in the room at any time” and that the setting was “very low key and very similar to what I have seen at other venues that I have attended where alcohol is sold.”

Board members discussed staffing and logistics. Chilson said tournament committees must decide whether volunteer staffing makes continued alcohol sales feasible; he described the sales as “not a huge money maker” and said some people enjoyed the option.

A board member moved to grant permission for three additional weekends; a second was recorded and the motion carried after a voice vote in which one member opposed. The board did not record a roll-call vote in the minutes provided at the meeting.

The board also accepted written Park, Recreation and Forestry Department reports and approved routine minutes earlier in the meeting. Cornerstone representatives were thanked and wished a happy holiday before the board moved to other business.

The park board’s action allows Cornerstone to offer alcohol at the specified additional tournament weekends under the same operational approach described at the meeting.
