Hamilton County Public Health representatives briefed the Village of Woodlawn council on Aug. 27 about the county's "We Thrive" community initiative and how Woodlawn participates.
Michelle Jones, the population health specialist assigned to Woodlawn, said We Thrive supports six pathways: chronic disease prevention, emergency preparedness, injury prevention, social conditions and social connection, environmental health and harm reduction. "Woodlawn has been a We Thrive community since 2009," Jones said, describing the village as an original pilot community and outlining past successes including a health and wellness fair, the village garden and a farmer's market.
Jones noted that council previously approved a $10,000 village allocation to support We Thrive projects and said county staff and local navigators (Coffee Higgins and Mary Wagner) will work with village staff and volunteers to target projects such as garden programming, CPR training, Narcan distribution and chronic disease education.
Council members encouraged greater participation from village departments (fire, police, public works) and discussed hosting an interest meeting at the community center to broaden local involvement. Jones said annual data profiles will be provided and a community assessment is scheduled in the near term to guide future priorities.
What happens next: We Thrive staff and local navigators will coordinate with village staff on outreach and programming; council indicated willingness to explore more in-person engagement and to discuss operational support at an upcoming CAL meeting.
