Commissioners hear fair recap and schools capital update; routine resolutions set for next week

Hamilton County commissioners opened their Dec. 10 agenda session with two presentations and the reading of several routine resolutions. Miss Shasta (Karen) gave a recap of the Hamilton County Fair, thanking county agencies and private sponsors and reporting that the fair drew "a little over 51,000 people over 3 days." She credited emergency management, EMS, the sheriff's office, TDOT and county maintenance staff for supporting the event and said Parks & Recreation staff worked long hours to run McDonald Farm.

The commission then received a presentation on Hamilton County Schools capital improvements from Gary Keene, chair of the facilities committee. Keene said the combined program directed about $260,000,000 toward new schools and roughly $60,000,000 toward capital projects and maintenance. Justin Witt, director of maintenance for the school system, said timeline constraints (summer work windows) make scheduling challenging and estimated "a year at least, year or maybe even 2 years" to complete the $60,000,000 in capital work.

The clerk also read a series of resolutions including notary public acceptances, an appointment to the citizens advisory board for recreation (Jamie Fairbanks), a $1,600 appropriation to East Hamilton High School from District 7 discretionary funds, and a five-year maintenance/payment processing agreement for the county clerk's motor vehicle and tax systems (contract language extends five years to expire 06/30/2030). Several of those items were scheduled for formal action next week.

What happens next: Presentations and handouts will be distributed to commissioners; school-maintenance timelines and the slides Keene referenced were made available for staff to circulate upon request.
