The Village of Woodlawn ceremonially swore in Steven Haney and Jack Davenport as police officers Jan. 28 and publicly commended Officer Greg Lee for a mutual-aid arrest in which the officer used nonlethal force to subdue a suspect. The council and mayor praised the department’s restraint and community service.
The Village of Woodlawn ceremonially swore in two new police officers during the Jan. 28 council meeting. Mayor Poole introduced the appointments of Jack Davenport and Steven Haney and administered the oath of office to both officers before council and family members.
Interim department leadership praised the recruits and highlighted a recent mutual-aid call in which Officer Greg Lee engaged and apprehended an individual allegedly attempting a break-in. According to the interim chief, the officer attempted a Taser deployment that had no effect before subduing the person without using lethal force; the chief said a video of the incident is available for review. “He engaged this person…went hands on, fighting him, and was able to apprehend him, never using any type of lethal force,” the interim leader said during the meeting.
Mayor Poole and councilmembers publicly thanked the officers for their service and expressed pride in the department’s actions. The mayor said the ceremony was intended to introduce the new officers to residents and to recognize the department’s work during recent severe weather and emergency responses.
The swearing-in and recognition were held as part of the council’s regular meeting and drew brief remarks of congratulations from multiple councilmembers. The council did not take additional formal action on the appointments during the meeting beyond the ceremonial oaths.
