West Windsor Township Council on Dec. 22 approved two resolutions appointing residents as alternates to the Zoning Board of Adjustment after an extended exchange over process and timing.
Councilmember Weiss asked that resolutions 2025‑R273 and 2025‑R274 be tabled, arguing the items were advanced with insufficient notice and without outreach to build a candidate pool. Weiss said the council received notice of the appointments just four business days earlier and described the action as “not transparent, not inclusive, and not an example of good government.” He added that the appointments could wait until the Jan. 15 reorganization meeting.
Council supporters, including the council president and other members, said the legal process had been followed, that the president had interviewed applicants and discussed them with colleagues, and that retirements and upcoming staff transitions made timely appointments advisable. Council members said having alternates in place was important for the Zoning Board’s quasi‑judicial function.
After debate, council voted to approve resolutions 2025‑R273 and 2025‑R274. Roll‑call votes were recorded, with Weiss voting no and a majority voting to adopt the appointments.
Public speakers during the second public‑comment period, including Joe Charles and Sanjay Mandloy, addressed the council and expressed support for the appointees. Mandloy (who introduced himself to the council) described volunteer leadership in his homeowners association and said he was eager to serve.
The council’s minutes list the appointments by resolution number; the council president said council can re‑examine appointments during the reorganization meeting in January if necessary.
