Board narrows standing committees after lengthy debate over workload and budget priorities

A contentious debate over committee structure dominated the Bridgeport Board of Education's Dec. 8 meeting, with members split on whether to retain four standing committees or move to a three-committee model that combines finance and facilities into an operations committee.

Opponents of consolidation warned the move would overload a single committee at a time when the district faces large potential budget shortfalls and proposed school-closure discussions. "We are in a point in time where our board needs to be working harder, not putting less committees to discuss things," Board member Joseph Sikalovic told colleagues.

Supporters said a smaller set of standing committees, supplemented by ad hoc committees for specific tasks such as the facilities master plan, would allow the board to streamline work and create an operations grouping to handle overlapping finance and facilities items. Rob Traver said an ad hoc approach could be used for extraordinary master-plan work while operations handled routine issues.

The meeting included multiple motions, attempts to table the item and roll-call votes. After votes and amendments, the board approved three standing committees: policy; instruction & support services; and operations. Several members recorded no votes or abstentions during the roll-call process; the final motion as presented passed and will take effect with committee assignments at the next organizational meeting.

Board members said they will continue using ad hoc committees where needed and that committee functions and membership will be revisited if necessary.
