Lake Clarke Shores council votes to permanently remove Keller Road gates despite resident safety concerns

Lake Clarke Shores — The Town Council voted to authorize permanent removal of the gates on Keller Road after staff summarized two traffic-calming studies and a traffic engineer's recommendation that removing the gates would not materially increase cut-through traffic.
Resident Tim Daughtry (1410 Keller Road), who addressed the council during public comment, said the intersection of Pine Tree and Forest Hill is dangerous and raised several safety concerns: "The trees need to be gone or significantly cut back... It's dangerous... We need speed enforcement there." Daughtry also said permanently removing the Keller Road gates without directly discussing it with residents on that road would be "premature." Staff described the history: the town commissioned a traffic-calming study in October 2023 and re-surveyed the site in April 2024; the engineer reported no significant speed or safety issues tied to removing the gates. Council members asked whether the gates could be reinstalled and whether other traffic measures, such as a speed table or stop sign, could be added if removal proved problematic. Staff said reinstalling gates is possible if the council follows proper notice and procedures.
A council member moved to "authorize the permanent removal of the Keller Gates," the motion was seconded and passed on a voice vote. Council directed staff to continue monitoring the location and to report back if traffic or safety problems arise.
