Staff reported progress on the City's Economic Development Strategic Plan and Business Spotlight program; commissioners unanimously asked City Council to consider a $10,000—2,000 summer town-center events allocation to boost foot traffic and support businesses.
City staff briefed the Economic Development Commission on 2025 progress toward Goal 4 of the Cerritos Strategic Plan'strengthening economic development'including consultant work on an Economic Development Strategic Plan (EDSP), business-retention efforts and a Business Spotlight video series.
Miss Miranda (staff) said the EDSP draft is nearing completion and staff anticipates bringing the draft to the Commission for review in early 2026. Staff highlighted outreach, tenant leasing activity on city-owned property, and modernization efforts such as an online permitting portal targeted for late 2026.
The Commission watched a short Business Spotlight video featuring Birmingham Controls (Greg Gass), a local manufacturer that described its operations and long tenure in Cerritos. Commissioners praised the Business Spotlight refinements and the new video component as a tool for business retention and promotion.
Separately, Chair Reyes proposed asking City Council to explore allocating $10,000—2,000 in next-year budget deliberations for an eight- to 12-week Thursday evening town-center music series aimed at drawing millennial and working-week audiences to local restaurants and retailers. Commissioners discussed measuring return-on-investment and seeking business input on projected benefits. By voice vote the Commission asked City Council to consider the request; staff will place the suggestion in upcoming budget discussions.
The Commission also received reports on recent City events (tree lighting, Santa's sleigh day) and CCPA programming, and members agreed to continue promoting local events to support businesses and sales-tax revenue.
