Cerritos sheriff's sergeant reports declines in robberies, vehicle thefts and burglaries

Sergeant Alfred Leo, representing the Cerritos station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, told the Economic Development Commission on Dec. 9 that several categories of theft and burglary have fallen year-to-date compared with the prior period.
Leo said robberies declined about 28% year-to-date (56 this year versus 78 last year), grand-theft-autos were down about 30% (189 vs. 270), petty thefts were down about 39% (498 vs. 825), and commercial burglaries fell roughly 36%. He also reported residential burglaries were down about 38% (117 vs. 190 year-to-date).
The sergeant credited coordinated work with mall loss-prevention teams, a designated mall deputy, strategic patrols and a regional task force for auto theft prevention. He said deputies have been encouraged to write reports around shopping centers during downtimes to increase visible presence and deterrence. Leo also noted the city's deployment of ALPR (automatic license-plate reader) cabinets as a tool for identifying and apprehending suspects who enter the city from other areas.
Commissioners praised the downward trends and asked about holiday staffing. City staff said the city contracts supplemental patrol services (Southwest Patrol) to augment sheriff coverage and that the sheriff's office maintains a heightened presence at high-target locations such as the Los Cerritos Center.
The presentation concluded with staff and commissioners agreeing to continue coordination with mall security and to monitor trends moving into 2026.
