Council backs mayoral letters supporting library and raising Parcel 6 concerns; names new development committee member

The Friendship Heights Village Council voted to approve two letters for the mayor to send to Montgomery County: one supporting a public library and performing arts center in the revised Friendship Heights sector plan and another expressing the village’s concerns about development on Parcel 6.
Council Member Francine Klein said the advisory committee on development supports a library and performing-arts facility, arguing it will help the village’s branding and community resources. On Parcel 6 (between Willard and North Park, west of Shoemaker Lane), Klein urged keeping small-scale (no more than 40 feet) buildings and preserving green space to protect sunlight and views for adjacent buildings such as the Willoughby, the Carlton and 4620/4615.
Council Member Mueller praised Klein’s work and the letter as a balanced approach that favors moderate housing while preserving open space. The council unanimously approved both letters. The mayor’s nomination of Michael Cooperman to serve on the advisory development committee was also approved unanimously.
