Iowa City school operations committee hears 2024 climate-action update; staff to return with targeted cost analyses
Summary
Design Engineering presented the district's 2024 greenhouse gas inventory showing a 62% reduction from 2018 and progress below the district's 2030 target; board members pressed staff for building-specific solar cost/savings analyses and options to accelerate electrification, while noting federal incentives favor geothermal over solar for some projects.
The Iowa City Community School District operations committee received an annual climate-action presentation on the district's greenhouse gas inventory for calendar year 2024 and requested targeted follow-up analyses on solar, electrification and long-term HVAC replacements.
Dwight Shum, a consultant with Design Engineering, told the committee the district's 2024 inventory shows significant progress since 2018.
