Several community-focused items featured in the Dec. 9 Waukegan CUSD 60 meeting.
Public comment: Melanie Lemos, who said she is the younger sister of Edwin Lemos, a safety officer at John Lewis Middle School who died Nov. 8, thanked the board, superintendent and multiple staff members by name for their support during her family’s bereavement. “He loved you all, and he will forever be missed,” Lemos said.
Community outreach: Benjamin Grimes, community liaison for school partnerships, announced a coat and hat giveaway at the Patricia A. Jones Center on Friday at 1 p.m. He urged community members to attend and noted Brookside campus outreach work and attendance supports. Board members asked whether additional coats were needed and Grimes said more donations would be welcome.
Winter meals: Administrators announced a Winter Break meal distribution planned for next Friday from 4:30–7:30 p.m.; staff will share a flyer and post details after the meeting. Miss Lindsey praised the timing change that was intended to make distribution accessible to working families.
Next steps: Flyers and additional outreach information will be distributed; administrators said they will coordinate volunteer and staff scheduling for evening distributions.
