Board reviews curriculum renewals, new AP Spanish course and proposal for diesel mechanics CTE pathway

Waukegan CUSD 60 administrators presented multiple instructional-material renewals and new course proposals during the student achievement meeting.
Doctor Cesario outlined renewals for tools and programs used across grade levels, including CAMI (student annotation tools), Amplify Boost and Boost La Cura (K–5 digital licenses), Everyday Math and DreamBox for K–5 math support, and Carnegie Math for grades 6–12. Cesario said these renewals are aligned with the district’s ELA and math programming and provide differentiated instruction.
The board also heard a proposal to add an AP Spanish Literature course to expand options for heritage and advanced Spanish learners. Miss Breiner, who spoke in support, said she was excited about the addition and that it addressed a gap in advanced coursework for native Spanish speakers.
Separately, administrators proposed adding a diesel mechanics course to the course offering guide (COG) to establish a longer-term program. Doctor Cesario clarified that approving the course in the COG is the first step and does not mean a class will be offered immediately; the proposed location is the Brookside campus near the Monroe Street garage area to accommodate large engines. Board members said student interest appears high (reported at 100–150 students) and supported the career-focused expansion.
The board also discussed a renewal/continuation of the American Institute for Research contract tied to an HPE CIP grant. An AIR representative described needs assessments, two-day site visits and report generation; administrators said the service is state-funded and not drawn from local lines, and that principals could report back to the board on the assessment results.
Next steps: curriculum renewals and course approvals will move forward through the normal approval process; administration will present related implementation details and any required budget information.
