Athens-Clarke County commissioners used a special called session to approve two supplemental budget amendments to help local food programs ahead of the holidays.
The commission amended the FY2026 operating capital budget to provide $50,000 to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. Manager Bob told commissioners the county's contingency has been reduced by prior allocations and that the current balance is "probably around 100,000" after recent commitments; he said ARPA reclamation and end-of-year reconciliations could replenish some funds but those amounts remain uncertain. Commissioner Myers asked staff to keep pursuing ARPA options to limit general-fund use.
A second ordinance amended the FY2026 budget to provide funding for the Athens Community Council on Aging Meals On Wheels program. Commissioners from several districts voiced support for both allocations as a way to fill gaps in federal and nonprofit services during holiday interruptions to SNAP and other programs. Both items passed by voice vote during the special session.
