Coffee County animal-control report: 88 intakes this month, new shelter expected in coming months

Craig, the county’s animal-control representative, updated the Health, Welfare & Recreation Committee on Dec. 18, reporting this month’s intake, outcomes and operational needs.
Craig said 88 animals entered the shelter during the month. Transcript counts listed 8 adoptions, 6 animals reclaimed by owners, 86 transfers to rescues, 5 euthanasias and one animal death at a veterinarian’s office; the transcript also records roughly $1,800 brought into the shelter this month and a year-to-date intake of 985 animals. Craig said those numbers reflect recent entries that may not yet be fully logged.
He said shelter population has been reduced to approximately 40–50 animals from previous peaks of 70–80 through transfers and rescue partnerships. Craig described an animal‑cruelty/hoarding response at a condemned house that required crew rotation because of unsafe ammonia levels; crews located two of five cats and will return to complete trapping work.
Craig described fleet issues (a vehicle electrical short, one aging Dodge nearing end-of-life and a 2017 vehicle with about 210,000 miles) and said the department is still waiting for delivery of a new truck. He said the new metal building for the shelter is under construction; staff discussed a projected occupancy meeting that suggested March, with a possibility of moving in February if the schedule permits. Committee members raised the need for a full‑time staff person to handle phones and data entry; the committee deferred the staffing decision to the January meeting pending additional information.
