Board hears health‑benefit changes: Hinge Health pilot and wellness programs for staff
Summary
Tempe reaffirmed its self‑insured health program and announced a Hinge Health pilot for musculoskeletal tele‑therapy along with expanded wellness offerings and EAP access to reduce long‑term claims and support staff wellbeing.
At the Dec. 17 meeting Tempe announced enhancements to employee healthcare and wellness benefits aimed at reducing claims and improving staff health.
The district, which remains self‑insured, said it has tested a Hinge Health tele‑therapy service for musculoskeletal care and plans to roll it out more broadly after an eight‑to‑12 month trial. The superintendent and benefits staff said Hinge Health (virtual physical therapy and guided recovery) helps staff access therapy without losing work time and may reduce future claims costs.
The board also heard about expanded wellness programming — yoga, pilates, nutrition supports, mental‑health EAP access and volunteer opportunities — and was asked to encourage employees to use generic prescriptions and mail‑order options to reduce premium pressure. The benefits team noted 656 employees participated in a recent wellness challenge and emphasized the district’s interest in preventative supports to limit long‑term medical claims.
The superintendent framed these investments as cost‑effective: keeping staff healthy reduces claim frequency and preserves budget capacity for staffing and programs. Board members thanked staff and encouraged broad participation in available services.
