Board OKs intermittent North Street closures for Village Promenade roof work after notification discussion

Carrie Grimes, general manager at Village Promenade, told the Board of Public Works and Safety that roofers arrived and she needs intermittent closures of North Street to allow crane access for roof replacement on two buildings.

“We do have the permits. We're getting the roof replaced on both of our buildings… we do need to close North Street in order to put the crane to, use the crane to take materials up to the roof,” Grimes said, and added that Ball State had given permission to use an adjacent lot via Chris Palladino.

Grimes said closures would be intermittent and that the roofer anticipated finishing the project in April depending on weather. Board members focused on how the closures would be publicized; suggestions included Ball State channels, a Ball State news item, resident notices and A-frame signage at either end of the street. Grimes said she would provide advance notice to residents and that the roofer would notify her a day in advance of closures.

A resident who identified himself as Jerry Wise asked whether there was a lease agreement for the parking spaces and raised a concern that a garage built by the city should be used for village parking. Other speakers said the garage was purchased last October from MRC and transferred into Village Promenade possession, and that developers had not accounted for existing occupied spaces in earlier parking counts.

Speaker 3 moved to approve the street-closure request; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Grimes said she would return with signed paperwork and would coordinate notifications.
