Bell County presents nearly $100,000 in child-safety fees to Temple

Bell County Tax Assessor-Collector Shay Luedeke presented the city of Temple with a check for the FY2025 allocation from the county's child safety fee program at the Dec. 18 council meeting. Luedeke said the allocation to Temple was $99,709.70 and explained the fee is an additional $1.50 per vehicle registration levied with commissioners court approval under state transportation code provisions.
Luedeke said Bell County registered approximately 333,600 vehicles in the year referenced, producing a notable growth in registrations from FY2024, and that countywide the program has collected and distributed nearly $9.7 million since it began; he said Temple has received $1,921,063.29 of those distributions over time.
Under state guidance read at the meeting, the child-safety fee can fund crossing guard programs or, where a school district lacks a crossing guard program, be directed to child-safety, health or nutrition initiatives, child abuse prevention or public-safety efforts as allowed by relevant code. Luedeke said a notification was also sent to Temple Independent School District.
Council accepted the presentation and thanked county officials for the allocation; no council action to appropriate the funds was recorded during the meeting.
