Dwight Weasey, chair of Mount Healthy’s Tree Commission, told the city council that Mount Healthy was awarded a $100,000 grant to support tree projects over the next two years.
Weasey said the funding will be used for new plantings, care for existing trees and planning work. “Mount Healthy was a winner of a $100,000 grant … that grant will be used for planting trees, for carrying it for the trees we currently have,” he said. He also noted the commission completed a $25,000 grant this year and documented about $9,000 in volunteer labor to support tree events.
Council members asked whether the new grant required a city match; Weasey said it is a full grant and requires no matching funds from the city. He described a recent volunteer event on Perry Street that planted 17 trees with more than 30 volunteers and credited the fire department with helping water new plantings immediately after the event.
Weasey said the city qualifies for Tree City USA and that he had obtained the mayor’s signature necessary to complete the application paperwork. The council did not take formal action on the grant at the meeting.
The city can expect the grant work to include planting, maintenance and planning over two years, Weasey said; details about specific planting sites beyond Perry Street were not specified. Council members thanked the commission for the volunteer effort and the work accomplished this year.
