Norwalk highlights HOPE team sheltering success; formerly unhoused resident given housing help and bike

The City of Norwalk used its resident assistance and HOPE team operations as an example of outreach success during the Dec. 9 meeting, presenting a formerly unhoused resident with a bicycle and describing steps that helped him move into shelter and temporary work.
Presenters said HOPE team officers first made contact in September and referred the individual to social services. Within two weeks partners secured shelter at a City of Bell facility and later connected him with rental and employment referrals. Sergeant Jimenez and Sergeant Relas described the case and said the resident had remained engaged with staff and even helped encourage others to seek services.
The resident, Tony Holton, addressed the council and said, "I wanna say thank you," and told the council staff "They helped me get to school." City Manager and staff praised the social services team and HOPE officers for their work linking people to shelter, meals and case management. No policy or new funding was approved at the meeting; the presentation served as an informational update on existing programs and partnerships.
