Members of the Sustainable Action Plan Workgroup (SAPW) briefed the board on a proposed feasibility pilot to test biochar as a soil amendment on city turf and park sites.
“A ton of biochar will sequester about 2 and a half tons of CO2 equivalent,” said a SAPW member presenting the proposal, describing biochar’s potential co‑benefits for water retention and soil health. The group reported a productive initial meeting with Parks staff and outlined next steps: identify a supplier (local if possible), select pilot sites (preferably problem areas where turf struggles), and recruit university partners to design monitoring and evaluation.
Parks staff participating in the conversation flagged operational realities — tree removals, disposal costs for beetle‑killed trees, and limited staff monitoring capacity — and said they were receptive to exploring the idea further. SAPW said it will convene with Parks again in January to pursue site selection, sampling protocols, and potential funding or research partnerships.
Next steps: SAPW and Parks will meet again in January; staff will research suppliers, application methods (surface application vs. incorporation with compost), and options for university partner involvement to monitor outcomes and costs.
