Jeffersontown public works staff updated the council on two operational fronts: roadwork at Planetside and winter salt procurement.
On Planetside, staff said contractors have been using rented pumps to remove standing water after recent storms and that weather has slowed progress. The public-works speaker said the contractor is eager to remove pumps because rental costs are high; staff aims to reopen at least one lane while maintaining traffic flow. The speaker added that LG&E will perform utility work behind city crews once roadway work is complete, and forecasted that LG&E's work could follow in about two weeks but that the schedule remains weather-dependent.
On salt procurement, public works said the city had used an unprecedented amount of road salt for December weather and hit its allotment limit under the KYTC district 5 contract. Staff contacted the supplier (Cargill) and said there were approximately 500 tons immediately available and a potential ability to draw 20% of a 1,500-ton overage (discussed as roughly 800 additional tons) through contract flexibility or by piggybacking via Metro. The speaker said he was 'freaking out' before arranging this breathing room and that there is no guarantee more salt will be available if storms continue.
Council did not take formal action during the report but instructed staff to continue procurement efforts and to coordinate with Metro and utility sequencing to minimize traffic impacts.
