The Town of Hubbardston Select Board voted Dec. 15 to have Select Board member Heather contact the Massachusetts Division of Local Services and solicit proposals from local accounting firms to support the town’s finance operations after a series of departures slowed year-end closeout work.
Board members said FY25 books remain open and are "still off by a small sum of funds," and that the town needs assistance to close the books and certify free cash for budgeting. "We gotta get the books closed for last year, free cash certified," a Select Board member said during the discussion.
The board discussed the potential role of consulting firms, noting those firms would provide proposals similar to firms the town has used in the past; the Division of Local Services typically provides technical assistance at no charge. The board agreed to ask Heather to reach out to the Division of Local Services to explore available assistance and to contact a few local firms to request quotes.
The motion to authorize Heather to reach out to the Division of Local Services and local accounting firms was made, seconded and passed. The board said it will invite one or more firms to a subsequent meeting to describe services and proposals.
Next steps: Heather will contact the Division of Local Services and local accounting firms; the board will schedule follow-up discussions with potential vendors to determine short-term support and any costs involved.
