Woburn committee approves Alta Vista assistant principal, hears energy-efficiency and student-services updates
Summary
The committee approved an assistant principal position at Alta Vista Elementary, heard a resources-and-capital presentation stressing energy-efficiency for the new North Woburn/Alta Vista project and learned student services face long out-of-district wait lists and staffing vacancies.
The Woburn School Committee voted to add an assistant principal position at Alta Vista Elementary after a personnel subcommittee recommendation. The motion was made and seconded and passed by voice vote.
Resource and capital planning members reported an energy-efficiency briefing from Director Burnham about the North Woburn/Alta Vista (ECP) project. Burnham warned that failing to prioritize efficient design and lower energy-use intensity (EUI) could create higher long-term operating costs and potential budget shortfalls, and cited incentives such as Mass Save and technical assistance available to the district. The subcommittee recommended scheduling a presentation by Eversource for the full committee to review efficiency opportunities and incentives.
Student services reported increased out-of-district placements and long wait lists for restrictive programs. Doctor Ryan said the district is seeing the longest wait lists since the pandemic and that the assessment center and an out-of-district coordinator are working to place students and provide interim supports. The district also reported vacancies for two clinical psychologists for the middle and high schools and said it will continue recruitment.
Committee members asked for follow-up on energy-incentive timing and staffing progress; director and student-services staff will return with additional details in January.
