At a Dec. 17 Liberty Hill ISD board meeting, trustees voted to name Travis Motel the lone finalist for superintendent after a closed-session interview. Board members praised Motel’s leadership during a challenging recent period; Motel thanked staff, family and the community.
The Liberty Hill ISD board on Dec. 17 named Travis Motel the lone finalist for the district’s superintendent job following a closed-session interview, the board announced at an open meeting that evening.
Board member Neighbors moved that the board name Travis Motel the lone finalist for the position of superintendent of schools; Board member Kennedy seconded the motion. The presiding officer called for those in favor to raise their hands and declared the motion carried by voice/hand vote.
The action followed a closed session called under the Texas Open Meetings Act; the presiding officer cited Texas Government Code §§551.071 (attorney consultation) and 551.074 (superintendent applicant interview) before resuming open session at 6:35 p.m.
Board members offered public praise for Motel after the vote. "He's been phenomenal to work with," Board member Christy said, adding congratulations to Motel and his family. A board member identified as Brandon said Motel had "leaned into a storm" during the past eight months and referenced Motel's earlier convocation remark about "the buffalo leaning into the storm." Board member Carter said he consulted current and former superintendents around the state who spoke positively of Motel and said he was glad the district had "your guy." Board member Edsgaard said she was "super excited to continue to work with you." The presiding officer thanked Motel personally for stepping into the role during a difficult period and acknowledged the strain on his family.
Motel responded to the board's support, thanking trustees for their confidence over the past seven months and praising central office staff, cabinet members, parents and the community. "We've done this together for the last six years that I've been here, and let's do it for however many more it takes," Motel said.
The board announced upcoming meeting dates — a Jan. 5 special meeting at 6:00 p.m. and a regular meeting Jan. 20 — and then adjourned after a motion by Missus Hargrove, seconded by Missus Escorn. The meeting ended with the presiding officer declaring the motion to adjourn carried.
No vote tallies or individual roll-call votes were recorded in the open transcript; the board announced the motion carried by the presiding officer after a hands-raised vote.
