Sandusky trustees report design-builder selected for recreation center; staff expect 15-month schedule

Speaker 4, a city staff member, told the Sandusky Boards & Commissions that the City Commission recently passed legislation to enter into a contract with Janata Herner to serve as the recreation center's design-builder. "Theywant to do a great job," Speaker 4 said, adding that the firm is eager to begin work while staff and the law department continue to finalize contract language.

Speaker 4 said the city will publish progress updates and materials at cityofsandusky.com/reccenter and expects the design-builder to provide floor plans, stormwater/retention considerations and other design details for review. On schedule, Speaker 4 said, "They're telling us 15 months. They would like to break ground in February." The timeline was described as the builder's current plan; staff cautioned that contract completion and permitting could alter dates.

Questions from the board addressed site amenities and sequencing. Speaker 4 said the parking-lot work tied to the facility will include the tennis courts and an expanded parking area, and that sidewalks on Rockwell are a separate city project and not included in the recreation center budget. "Once we get the site plan, we can certainly let you know," Speaker 4 said.

The announcement included no formal vote recorded in these segments beyond the commission's legislation; staff said they would share design documents at a future board meeting and post photos and updates on the project web page. The rec center timeline remains contingent on final contract execution, procurement steps and construction permitting.
