Glen Rock board leans to starting 2027–28 after Labor Day; holidays and Diwali debated

Board members reviewed a draft 2027–28 school calendar and signaled consensus to start the school year after Labor Day, with staff professional-development days scheduled before students return.

Administrators distributed paper copies of a preliminary calendar and noted contract-required holidays and staffing orientation dates. Trustees discussed two competing priorities: preserving a post-Labor Day student start favored by many parents and keeping three consecutive PD/orientation days at the beginning of the year preferred by many teachers. One trustee urged the board to respect Glen Rock’s convention of not starting before Labor Day, saying, “You do not start school before Labor Day in Glenrock,” while others said they supported summer planning time for teachers and asked for greater clarity on how PD days would be scheduled.

The board also discussed religious observances that fall in 2027 — Rosh Hashanah (Oct. 1–3), Yom Kippur, and Diwali (Oct. 29) — and how observing those dates might push the school year’s end later in June. Trustees noted absenteeism patterns around a Friday holiday and said adding Diwali as a day off would likely move the last day to June 23 (from June 22) under current calculations. The board also reviewed progress on municipal discussions about moving elections out of school buildings; administrators said the borough is exploring accessible alternative venues, including improvements to the public library.

Trustees asked administration to provide additional data and draft calendars for further review; the board scheduled a follow-up discussion for Dec. 15 before any final action.
