City recognizes first cohort of Young Neighbors Academy, highlights youth civic engagement

Bowling Green’s Parks and Recreation staff introduced and recognized the first cohort of the Young Neighbors Academy at the Dec. 16 commission meeting.
Cameron Lehi described the program, which ran this fall at Parker Bennett and Moxley community centers to give youth a behind-the-scenes look at local government. Activities included tours with public information staff, public works, police and fire training facilities; students organized a park cleanup at Roland Bland and ran a food drive. Lehi named participating students and said the program is a partnership with Neighborhood and Community Services.
Lehi introduced several students and thanked staff leads for the program. Commissioners offered congratulations and encouragement to the students and staff for fostering civic awareness and servant leadership.
One student idea — to create "Kool-Aid water fountains" — drew light amusement from the dais as an example of the students’ creativity.
