The board approved a memorandum of understanding to implement the Standard Response Protocol with the I Love You Guys Foundation and authorized a January roll‑out with materials and training for staff and students as described by Stephen Westmoreland.
The Catawba County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a memorandum of understanding to adopt the Standard Response Protocol in partnership with the I Love You Guys Foundation.
Stephen Westmoreland presented the MOU and said the district had discussed the protocol with principals, teachers and law enforcement and received positive feedback. "We feel like it gives us common vocabulary throughout the district and also a response to emergent anything that, hopefully, anything, any emergency situation that would arise," he said, and recommended implementation beginning in January.
Westmoreland said each school will receive printed copies of the protocol, training videos for middle and high schools, and elementary teachers will be trained although elementary students will not be part of the student training. The board moved to approve the MOU and authorized staff to proceed with distribution and training.
The MOU is intended to standardize emergency vocabulary and response practices across district schools and to begin phased training in January.
