Leavenworth board highlights JAG‑Kansas program and honors state athletic qualifiers
Summary
The board recognized fall athletes and heard a presentation from JAG‑Kansas staff describing employer engagement, certifications (OSHA‑10, Stop the Bleed, CPR) and follow‑up services; presenters said the local JAG program serves about 41 students and Success Academy reports a 98% graduation rate.
At the start of its Dec. 8 meeting the Leavenworth USD 453 board recognized student athletes and heard a presentation from the local Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG‑Kansas) program. The superintendent and staff presented certificates to Diego Garrick, a state cross‑country qualifier, and to members of the Leavenworth High School football team for a 9–2 season. Coach and staff were acknowledged and certificates and team photos were taken.
JAG‑Kansas specialists Tamia Moorsden and Carla Pleasure introduced the district’s new JAG program and described services offered this semester: OSHA‑10 workplace safety and Stop the Bleed certifications already provided, planned CPR certification for seniors before graduation, employer engagement through guest speakers and business tours, practice ASVAB testing and free official ASVAB testing for students planning to enlist. Moorsden said the Leavenworth program has a roster of 41 students locally and that the national JAG program reports high outcomes; she cited that "our graduation rate was 98" for the local Success Academy. Student leader Reno Seymour Jackson said the program had helped his public speaking.
Trustees asked about funding and were told the program receives both federal and state funding; presenters said employer engagement is organized in tiers and that the program is piloting micro‑credentials to help students market skills to employers. The board thanked the students and program staff for the presentation and recognition events closed with photos.
