Marine View Concert Choir performs as school is honored with CSBA Golden Bell

The Ocean View School District Board of Trustees on Dec. 9 recognized Marine View Middle School after its visual and performing arts program received a California School Boards Association Golden Bell Award. The board heard a performance by the Marine View Concert Choir, directed by Elise Slaney, who sang "Carol of the Bells" a cappella.
Superintendent Dr. Hofer praised the program and provided performance metrics used to illustrate the program's impact: he said the program engages more than 700 students in grades 6–8, offers 16 VAPA course sections on the master schedule, reports about a 95% attendance rate in those classes and an average GPA of 3.89 for participating students, and that more than 70% of eighth‑grade VAPA students continue into the district's high‑school performing-arts academy. "These numbers prove what we already knew," Dr. Hofer said, thanking teachers, staff and families.
Board members congratulated students, staff and the principal and took a group photo with the choir. The recognition was part of a broader round of acknowledgements during the meeting, which included district awards and staff recognitions.
The Golden Bell honor is a district highlight and was previously announced at the CSBA conference earlier that week.
