Superintendent Robert Scott reported that a surge resulting from a Division Street accident damaged district technology, including servers, and disrupted phone service. Contracted technicians working under the district's support contract restored systems within days, Scott said, and the district plans to meet with the vendor to identify additional purchases and measures to prevent similar incidents.
"We actually had some technology go down because of an accident on Division Street and so we lost a bunch of our tech," Scott said. He described the event as a surge that affected servers and noted that phones were one of the first services restored. The district has ordered materials and plans an additional meeting with its contracted provider in January to discuss long-term remedies.
Scott also said that construction-project meetings for the district are scheduled to start in January. He urged board members to continue legislative outreach on funding shortfalls for dropout-prevention positions, saying Burlington receives "probably 60%" of the funding that some other districts receive and that the district continues to advocate for increased, phased funding.
Board members asked clarifying questions about phone connectivity and continuity plans; Scott said the district is arranging hotspots and Webex capability to maintain communications in the future.
The board recessed briefly before a scheduled closed session.
