Alpine parks board details Coconut and Medina Park upgrades, warns budget tight

The Alpine Parks & Recreation Board heard a series of updates on park projects Tuesday evening, including new sidewalks, restroom repairs and electrical work at neighborhood parks, though staff warned their maintenance budget is largely spent for the year.
Parks supervisor (Speaker 3) told the board the city is planning a roughly six‑foot curved sidewalk from the entrance at Coconut Park to improve access for wheelchairs and wagons and to reduce flooding that now washes field material toward first base. He said mounting brackets are awaited before installing a scoreboard at International Field and that restroom repairs are delayed while the water department addresses a persistent leak. "I turned [the sprinklers] off on December 1, and then I turned them on probably late March, depending on the weather," he said.
At Medina Park, Speaker 3 said crews removed two dead pine trees and plan to replace them with oak saplings (about two for every tree removed) and that a contractor, TTA Electric, has the electrical bid for lights and related boxes. He added that barbecue pits and new swings have been installed and that a bathroom enclosure bid is expected to start soon.
Staff cautioned that recent projects have nearly exhausted the parks budget. "My budget's already like, I have to move money around... I pretty much exhausted it," Speaker 3 said, adding that any additional major projects this fiscal year will require finding new funding sources.
The board discussed prioritizing maintenance and using donations and grants where possible; officials noted that donated amenities (benches, scoreboards) require formal approval and recording by the finance department before installation.
The board did not take formal votes on new capital work at the meeting and directed staff to return with cost estimates and scheduling for council consideration.
