Rural residents tell Scott County meeting mail service cut off on some roads; county urges federal contact

Multiple residents in Cedar Lake Township told Scott County commissioners that regular postal delivery has been canceled on their road, forcing them to travel to a post office box and prompting questions about the county’s ability to respond.

Jeff and Kelly Van Heel said their mail service on Panama Avenue stopped recently while their property-tax bill increased roughly 20%. "We just recently had had our mail service canceled," one resident said, describing long lines at the post office and the burden of traveling to collect correspondence.

Commissioners and staff said the U.S. Postal Service controls route decisions. A county official noted safety and shoulder widths on township roads can be a factor in the post office’s routing choices and suggested residents contact their congressional delegation for assistance. County members also encouraged residents to discuss group-mailbox options with their township and to contact state and federal representatives.

Board members said they have limited direct authority over postal operations but will help coordinate residents' outreach to the federal delegation and the township. They also noted that the county’s transportation staff is exploring alternate locations for secure group mailboxes where property ownership and right-of-way allow.

The exchange highlighted a common theme at the meeting: residents seeking clearer explanations and practical help for problems that involve multiple levels of government. County staff reiterated it can convene local partners and direct residents to township meetings to pursue community solutions.
