Board advances two policy updates on first reading: research projects and animals in schools

Policy 86‑50 establishes a consistent process for reviewing and approving research projects and internal surveys in schools, including when parent consent is required; the policy formalizes existing practice by specifying the director-level approvals needed. Policy 8,700 clarifies when animals are allowed on school campuses by distinguishing legally required service animals from permitted therapy animals (which require certification, supervision and administrative approval) and from classroom pets or instructional animals (which require advance approval and parent notification).
Both policies were advanced on first reading and will return for a subsequent reading or adoption as the board’s process requires.
