Murfreesboro board approves 2026–27 school calendar after teacher advisory input

The Murfreesboro City School Board on Dec. 9 approved the 2026–27 academic calendar after a presentation from a teacher advisory council member who helped shape the schedule.

Dr. Duke, the district director, said the proposed calendar aligns student start dates, fall break, spring break and winter break with Rutherford County Schools and designates stockpile days for professional learning and for inclement weather. "The first few days of school for students, fall break, spring break, and winter break all coincide with the dates for Rutherford County Schools," he said.

Macy Barrett, a Bradley Academy teacher and a member of the district’s teacher advisory council, told the board the council prioritized teacher and parent needs when drafting the calendar. Barrett said the council aimed to provide flexibility for parent‑teacher conferences by keeping a full day designated for conferences in both the fall and spring. "As a committee, it was our priority to ensure that both teacher and parents' concerns were heard and taken into consideration," Barrett said.

Board members asked how closely the calendar aligns with the county; Dr. Duke replied that major student dates are aligned while teachers return one day earlier to accommodate planning and conferences. Mr. Campbell moved to approve the calendar; the board approved the motion by voice vote.

The board's approval finalizes school start and break dates for the coming year and preserves nine stockpile days for inclement weather and four for professional learning, Dr. Duke said. The district will distribute the final calendar to families and post it on the district website.
