The Michigan City Parks and Recreation Board voted Dec. 17 to accept Larson Danielson’s bid and award a $474,812 construction contract for the Wings and Wonder exhibit at the city zoo.
Staff told the board it received four bids and that Larson Danielson was the apparent low bidder. The low bid included a base amount of $427,927 plus a clearstory alternate of $46,885 for a total of $474,812 — a figure staff said falls within the project budget. After reading the bid totals and answering board questions about contingency, a motion to accept Larson Danielson’s bid carried by voice vote.
Public commenter Scott Mellon praised the inclusion of the clearstory alternate and expressed optimism the project would be ready for use in the coming season. Shannon (the superintendent) said staff hoped for a May completion but noted earlier delays made an April 1 opening unrealistic.
At the same meeting the board approved the standard construction agreement template, which staff said had been reviewed by the city attorney and insurance sections had been updated; the policy named High Street Insurance Company as the contractor’s insurer. The board then voted to approve and award the contract.
What’s next: Contract execution and construction scheduling; staff will coordinate timelines and insurance/contract requirements with Larson Danielson.
