The Streator City Council approved resolutions and ordinances to sell city-owned parcels and to solicit bids for other surplus properties, including downtown lots.
The council considered a resolution authorizing sale of a city parcel (transcribed as 325 West Breck Street) and later a separate ordinance referencing 302 Sherpa Street, both reported for sale to Jose Rodriguez Gascon. A presenter described interest from an out-of-suburb contractor in building new single-family homes within Streator and called the sales a positive first step toward encouraging residential development inside city limits.
Separately, the council approved Resolution 51 to solicit bids on surplus properties. The presenter advised caution about selling certain downtown parcels for speculative purposes and recommended re-establishing a downtown planning project to guide future sales. He noted the city had acquired several lots over the years and that advertising the properties gives the council flexibility while protecting specific lots from sale unless council directs otherwise.
Motions were made and seconded for the property sales and for the surplus-bid solicitation; roll-call votes recorded ayes for each action. Council discussion included curiosity about home types, references to recently demolished properties, and a desire to see downtown reinvestment.
Next steps: staff will proceed with required advertising and bid solicitation, and the council’s approvals allow the city to finalize sales to identified buyers and accept offers consistent with advertised terms.
