TELUS operator says vestibule impractical; will install sound panels and address ceiling issues

Representatives for Sirius Hospitality Group LLC, operating as TELUS and the Satellite Bar, updated the Northampton License Commission Dec. 17 on a recent sound assessment and proposed mitigation steps.

Anna Reisling, speaking for the operator, said a consultant who inspected the site concluded the distance to the nearby apartment building and the venue's brick construction limited effective interventions. "I don't really see anything in here that we can do beyond what we're doing," she told the commission, adding that a vestibule would likely offer the most benefit but would have to extend 7 feet for ADA compliance and would interfere with the Tuesday farmers market.

Reisling said TELUS had explored using a neighboring hallway and had scheduled a visit from a vestibule contractor, but that option was not viable; the operator instead plans to install acoustic panels on an interior wall and to repair the back‑door ceiling to reduce sound leakage.

Kevin Ross and other building/fire staff cautioned that any acoustic foam or sound‑absorbing materials must be fire rated and asked the operator to submit manufacturer documentation before installation. Ross referenced the Station nightclub fire as the reason for strict documentation requirements: if foam is not fire‑rated it can increase ignition and spread. Reisling said the operator had already purchased panels and would verify their rating before proceeding and would email specifications to staff for review.

The commission accepted the update and directed staff to collect any required documentation before installations proceed.
