Goldsboro — The Wayne County Development Alliance on Dec. 1 presented a five-year capital campaign proposal and asked the city of Goldsboro to consider contributing $150,000 (proposed as $30,000 a year for five years) to support industrial land acquisition and staffing.
Mister Benton, identified as the Impact Wayne capital campaign chairman, summarized the WCDA’s recent successes, citing roughly 1,400 new jobs and several large capital investments in the area. "Our request today is for a $150,000," he said, noting that the campaign would support additional shell buildings, land assembly and adding staff to sustain regional recruitment efforts.
Council members responded with questions about governance and accountability. Several asked whether the city has an active memorandum of understanding with WCDA and who selects WCDA board members. Benton said WCDA bylaws include city-area members and county-elected officials but offered to provide the bylaws and meet with council and city staff for a work session. Council emphasized it wants an MOU or written deliverables before approving any funding commitment.
What happens next: WCDA will provide bylaws and additional documents; city staff and interested council members will schedule a follow-up meeting to define deliverables, roles and possible contribution structures prior to formal council consideration of any funding.
