Board recognized Esports teams and named state placers, including David Williams as the district’s first individual state champion; administrators said the program expects to expand to more titles and participants next season.
The Board of Education recognized Batavia High School’s Esports program and honored students who placed at the state level this fall. Coaches Connor Legueta and (not present) Cody Murphy were invited to the podium to brief the board on a season that included 28 students competing across six titles and multiple podium finishes.
The coach read names of team members who qualified for and advanced in playoffs and identified senior Jacob Cooper as the marble rivals captain and David Williams as the district’s first individual state champion in Brawlhalla. The coach said the program is growing: staff expect over 45 students to compete across 12 titles in the spring and noted the team has built a district YouTube and Twitch presence.
Board members and attendees applauded the students and parents for the program’s rapid development since its inception just over a year ago.
Next steps: coaches will continue to develop the program and bring updates to the board as the spring season approaches.
