The Batavia USD 101 board voted to join a national class-action lawsuit related to social media; administrators said district attorneys reviewed the template agreement and confirmed there is no direct financial liability for the district.
The Batavia USD 101 Board of Education voted to join a nationwide class-action lawsuit concerning social-media platforms after administration presented a template participation agreement and said attorneys had reviewed the materials.
Administration said the agreement is consistent with similar documents used by other Illinois districts and that any attorney fees would be paid from settlement proceeds rather than directly by the district. The superintendent and staff said several Illinois districts have joined the litigation and that counsel reviewed the template language presented to the board.
Rob moved to approve joining the litigation; Aaron seconded. Cindy led the roll call and the motion passed.
Board members did not request additional financial exposure beyond the counsel’s explanation that the district would not incur an out-of-pocket liability under the agreement presented. Administration framed the action as an option for the board to participate in a coordinated legal step rather than a required action.
