Sunbury City Council on Dec. 8 voted to reserve $13,850.50 from a remaining budget line to begin a red‑light camera project, the council’s presiding officer said.
The presiding officer told council members that the funds were left over after the city administrator's departure and proposed earmarking the balance for 2026 so the city can begin obtaining quotes and planning installations on main corridors including Marcus, Forest and Front streets. "I'd like to reserve the remaining balance that is in that line item of $13,850.50 for the camera project for the red lights," the presiding officer said during the meeting.
Council members and staff discussed coverage priorities and device features. One councilmember described existing camera coverage at several locations and noted license‑plate reader capability in some systems; staff said they would obtain formal quotes before the city signs any contracts. The council noted that an approximate per‑intersection cost was not yet confirmed; the presiding officer gave an example figure of about $3,000 per intersection as an illustrative starting point.
The motion to reserve the funds was seconded and approved by voice vote. City staff will return with quotes and recommendations before any procurement or contract is finalized.
The decision carries no immediate contract award; the reserved amount will remain in the capital reserve until the council approves specific purchases or agreements.
