Warr Acres to consider standardizing probationary firefighter pay at 92% of step 1; resolution to be drafted for January
Summary
Fire Chief Coy proposed aligning probationary firefighter pay to 92% of the first step in the pay matrix (cited at $47,439.25), arguing it prevents repeated annual pay requests; staff said $46,000 was budgeted and will draft a resolution for the Jan. meeting.

Chief Coy told the council the city has not increased probationary firefighter pay since 2020 and proposed adopting a policy that sets probationary pay at 92% of the first step of the collective-bargaining pay matrix so probationary salaries automatically track contract increases. He said that would amount to $47,439.25 under current figures, and acknowledged the amount would require a budget adjustment if the council adopts the policy.
Staff said the city had budgeted $46,000 for the new hire in the current personnel plan and that adopting the 92% rule could be implemented by a resolution and a later appropriation if needed. Council members discussed timing and budget mechanics; several favored drafting a resolution so the chief could inform prospective applicants what to expect. Staff agreed to prepare a resolution for the Jan. meeting; the chief said the earliest feasible start date for a new hire would be Jan. 20 if the council approves the resolution.
Council did not take a final vote on pay at the Dec. 16 meeting; the item will return in January as a formal resolution for consideration.
