School board approves Sierra Therapy addendum to fund two monitors for special‑needs students

Taos — The Taos Municipal Schools Board voted Nov. 19 to approve an amendment to a contract with Sierra Therapy Professionals LLC to add two monitors who will be placed in classrooms to ensure students participate in and engage with online professional services.
Associate Superintendent Reneta Mondragon presented the addendum, saying the monitors will function similarly to educational assistants by supervising student engagement with online providers rather than delivering the therapy themselves. She told the board the monitors would be required to complete district certification prior to placement and that the district’s legal team had reviewed the addendum.
Mondragon said the first monitor’s cost for the remainder of the school year is $34,314 and the second monitor is $17,157; she added that if student needs change and more hours are required, staff will return to the board for approval of additional funding. Superintendent Antonio Layton recommended approval. A motion to approve the amendment passed on recorded roll call (Board Member King, Secretary Trujillo, Vice President Sprague and President Flores voting yes).
The amendment is intended to increase on‑site support and engagement for students receiving online special‑education services; the board asked staff to notify trustees if services or costs need to change.
