District 21 highlights student achievements and community partnerships at year-end meeting

At its Dec. 11 meeting the board recognized student artists, middle-school musicians qualified for district and all-state honors, staff presenters at state and national conferences, the Indian Trails Public Library partnership issuing >1,400 student library cards, and community support initiatives including school food pantries and staff-organized student care packages.
The Wheeling CCSD 21 Board of Education used part of its Dec. 11 meeting to recognize student achievements, staff presentations and community partnerships.
Superintendent Dr. Connolly announced results of a district holiday-card contest that drew more than 80 student submissions; the district will send more than 500 holiday cards featuring student designs. He also recognized 18 middle-school musicians who qualified for the Illinois Music Educators Association District 7 concert and jazz festivals; three students earned all-state honors and will travel to Peoria in January.
The board also celebrated staff who presented at state and national conferences. Melissa Scaletta summarized her presentation at a directors’ conference about early-childhood practice and TPBA implementation. Ann Cordina and colleagues described sessions for the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children on supporting multilingual newcomer students. Anya Figueroa and other language-services staff reported presenting two sessions at the WIDA national conference in Seattle on social-emotional supports and literacy strategies for students new to the country.
Dr. Connolly and Director of Literacy Amy Bridal highlighted a district partnership with Indian Trails Public Library that allowed students to obtain library cards without additional residency proof; the district reported more than 1,400 library-card applications. The district also noted family-support initiatives including a new food pantry at Field Elementary and a staff-led assembly of 400 Halloween goodie bags at Whitman Elementary.
The board observed a moment to honor the recent passing of community leader Bev Sussman and extended condolences to her family.
