Workgroup approves single-exit appendix language and adds pointer to fire code

The Building Code Council’s single-exit workgroup voted Dec. 16 to add a single-exit exception to the draft code language and to place a pointer in the fire code showing where the IBC appendix for single-exit multiplexes can be found.

Chair Roger opened the discussion by identifying the outstanding item: a user note and whether the International Fire Code should point readers to the International Building Code appendix that allows a single exit in limited multiunit buildings. "We voted that there was not a requirement for duplicate in the IFC," Roger said, explaining the group’s previous decision and the current question about adding a pointer.

Members debated how best to make that cross-reference visible to fire officials conducting inspections. Jonathan Goldsmith recommended placing a pointer in Chapter 10 (maintenance of the means of egress) so an inspector would readily see that a single exit may be permitted when a building was designed under the appendix.

After discussion, member John moved to add the proposed item 6 as drafted; Richard seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote. The workgroup agreed to leave the final text of a user note unresolved so members could review two or more drafting options before final approval at a subsequent meeting.

Roger said the group will forward the finalized recommendation to the Building, Fire and Related Workgroup (BFRW) and that a public comment period will follow as part of the CR-102 process. The workgroup asked staff to post updated text and the chosen figures before the next meeting for final review.
