HAMPDEN, Mass. ' The Select Board on Dec. 8 directed the highway superintendent to return with cost estimates for speed tables on several local roads and to re-examine a town TIP (Transportation Improvement Program) application to address a congested intersection at La Cocina and Main Street.
Residents said the relocation of the town hall may increase cut-through traffic on Raymond Drive and raised safety concerns. Board members noted state rules prohibit speed bumps but allow raised crosswalks or speed tables on roads with appropriate speed limits. "State doesn't allow [speed bumps]," the chair said; board members and the highway superintendent discussed speed tables as a compliant alternative.
The board voted to ask the highway superintendent to prepare cost estimates for speed tables and to look into reapplying or revisiting the TIP grant process for the La Cocina intersection. The police department also will monitor traffic to determine whether volumes have increased since the town hall moved.
No formal funding decision was made at the meeting; board members said any deployment would follow cost analysis and possible grant funding.
