Board approves lease insurance for Roseberry parcel and allocates $352,565 in open-space grants

The board approved two parks-related actions at its Dec. 1 morning session.
Roseberry parcel lease and insurance: Parks staff described a 313-acre tract on Roseberry Road (near Devil's Race Track) purchased by the Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC) intended to become a passive park. TLC requested a one-year lease and county general liability insurance to allow staff and contractors to enter the property while transfer is completed. Staff said a one-year general liability premium would be about $3,600; the board moved, seconded and approved procuring the insurance and authorizing the county manager to execute a lease with TLC.
Open Space Fund allocations: Parks reported nine applicants and 14 proposed projects in the 2025 open space grant cycle. Staff recommended funding 13 projects for a total allocation of $352,565.22 (from fee-in-lieu open-space funds). The board moved and approved the recommended funding by voice vote.
Regional park groundbreaking: Staff also announced a public groundbreaking for the new regional park at 444 Matthews Road scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. and invited the public to attend.
